Sustainable Development is one of University of Copenhagen, Faculty of SCIENCE’s thematic initiatives aimed at collecting and visualizing the resources, knowledge and ideas present within the theme.

The Sustainable Development initiative facilitates the exchange of knowledge and research on sustainable development across SCIENCE's departments. The initiative is led by the Sustainable Development working group and represents the collective voice on sustainable development research at the faculty of SCIENCE.

Ida Theilade (Chair)  

Department of Food and Resource Economics (IFRO)

Ida Theilade has worked with management and conservation of tropical forests for the past 25 years. Her main research interests are in the areas of indigenous knowledge and natural resource management in relation to agricultural systems and tropical forests.

Aske Skovmand Bosselmann  

Associate Professor
Department of Food and Resource Economics (IFRO)

Aske is an expert on the socio-economics of smallscale farming and agricultural value chains, and has worked extensively with smallscale farmers and livelihood issues in a developing country context. He is currently involved in research-based consultancy for the Danish Ministry of Environment & Food, teaching agricultural value chains and coffee economics, and participating as PI and WP lead in three international research projects on cocoa/coffee systems, agricultural economics and climate change with activities spanning six countries.

Henrik Friis

Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports (NEXS)

The last thirty years Henrik Friis has done research with collaborators in Africa and Asia. The focus of his research has been nutrition in relation to infections (i.e. parasites, TB and HIV), but also pregnancy and lactation, early growth and development, chronic diseases and interactions between infectious and chronic diseases.

Niels Fold

Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management (IGN)

Niels Fold’s research addresses the relationship between economic-geographic globalization processes and local responses, primarily examined through the analytical lens of global value chains (GVCs). He has specialized in agro-industrial value chains that connect producers in the Global South and consumers in the Global North.

Nikolaj Scharff

Nikolaj Scharff has the responsibility for all geological, botanical and zoological collections. His primary fields of research are phylogeny and comparative morphology of spiders in general.

Ole Mertz

Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management (IGN)

Ole Mertz' research and teaching responsibilities focus on global environmental change, land use transitions and food security in the Global South. Specifically, he has worked for two decades on the dynamics of forest-agriculture frontiers looking at how changes in land use affect socio-economic and environmental systems.

Lene Jespersen


Department of Food Science (FOOD)


Lene Jespersen is a professor of microbiology and fermentation and has worked with traditional fermentation methods from West Africa for the past 25 years - always in close collaboration with local researchers and the industry. The aim is to build and increase the capacity of traditional West African fermentation methods in order to strengthen the local economy.
